How to Spell Love

June 26th, 2008 by Rainey

If you are Baptist, chances are you spell love F-O-O-D. If you are from my family that is how you spell it too, but that it is a different post entirely.

My husband sometimes writes about things that make him glad to be a librarian. There are many things that make me very glad to be a pastor, especially at the church I serve. However, one of the very best things is probably the food. I say this as someone who is nursing a six-month old and is, consequently, ALWAYS hungry.

With that as my starting point it is, therefore, a wonderful thing to be working in my office. In addition to the lunches we each pack for our own consumption, this week this is what was sitting on the counter on any given day in our administrative workroom:

-A cheese, salami, pepperoni, and crackers tray

-An entire red velvet sheet cake with cream cheese icing and red sprinkles

-7 breakfast burritos made out of peanut butter, chocolate chips, bananas, and granola

-Assorted giant muffins

-Freshly picked cherries from our secretary’s cherry trees

-Chai tea

Seriously. If I ate half of what was readily available on any given workday, I would be ginormous. But I am not going to complain. I can graze when I get hungry. We gather around the table and talk about our weeks. My secretary talks about selling her late husband’s truck. The publications secretary talks about fishing with her two grandsons and how they spent the night at her house on the couch head to toe with one another. The financial secretary shares about how her mother never spoke anything but German until she went to school. When her father accepted a call from a Lutheran church in Texas she helped him write the requisite German sermon once a month. We learn about each other over this food. We pass my baby around from office to office as I try to write a sermon. He sleeps on the minister of children’s floor in her office when I have a meeting.

This is a good place to be. In fact, I think there are a number of ways we spell love around here. But, I am glad that one of the ways is F-O-O-D. Especially on those afternoons when my baby is crying and my stomach is growling and I need a little love and sustenance.
